After I got to be about 11-12, my parents started making gourmet meals, cooking all day, getting crazy ingredients, baking, prepping, etc. And then we'd sit down (sometimes they invited other adults and us kids got sent packing) and have some of the most terrific food. My father would sometimes say in those moments, giving homage to the quality of food we were eating, "I wonder what the peasants are eating tonight?" Simply a reference to our next night and his macaroni and hamburger soup left over in the fridge which we *were* going to eat, and to enjoy what we had right *then*.
